Behind the Scenes (BTS) Photographer Jobs

So you’re a photographer looking to find work behind the scenes on movie and TV sets. Most medium to large productions hire a photographer to capture moments behind the scenes to share with the cast, crew, and public following production. It’s a great way to preserve memories from the shoot and give the public a look at what really goes on backstage.

1. Skills

The first thing you should know is that you really don’t need any specific skills beyond the photography basics to work in this role. A basic understanding on how a film set operates is certainly preferred, but if you manage to stay out of the way of production and capture great shots, you’ll likely get great reviews. Keeping a positive attitude on long shoot days is important, and make sure to be proactive in getting your shots.

2. Job Openings

Okay so you have the skill set, but where do you actually find productions looking to hire BTS photographers for their shoots? For this there are several resources, one of which is a simple Google search for job openings. At Cinespot, we have also helped multiple photographers find jobs through our jobs portal here.

3. Pay and Prospects

Now you’re probably wondering what a BTS photographer might happen to make for a full shoot day. Usually, it’s a contract position paid after negotiating your daily rate. Some photographers who have extensive resumes of shooting BTS on major production might charge upwards of $2000 for a single day of BTS. And of course there are indie productions who will offer your “experience and an IMDb credit” but you’ll likely fall somewhere in between on the average shoot.
